Random Notes for June

Matthew Brady, "Battery D, 2nd US Artillery at Fredericksburg, VA."
So I'm still working on a long-form post for the Margaret Garner series and a pretty long piece about some of the abolitionist sites I visited in Ripley, Ohio recently. But until then, here are some links to some good articles I've run across and some books I've been reading:

- "The False Heroism of a Civil War Photographer" (The Atlantic) --  Great profile of photographer photographer Matthew Brady. We've all seen his photos (see above), but this article speaks more about the man himself.
- "Missouri's War Within the War" (The New York Times) -- I've read more and more pieces about Missouri and it's hard-to-define role in all things leading up to and concerning the war. This is from the Times' Disunion blog and is written by the University of Cincinnati's own Christopher Phillips!
- Beyond the River by Ann Hagedorn -- Speaking of Ripley, if you want check out a fantastic book about the city's abolitionist past and it's prime importance in the movement, I HIGHLY recommend this book.
